Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili has formally presented Giorgi Gabitashvili, the country’s former Prosecutor General, as the nominee for Auditor General, following the resignation of Tsotne Kavlashvili.

Kavlashvili, who stepped down earlier this week, has returned to his previous role as Deputy Minister of Finance - a position he held from 2015 to 2022. He also served as Head of the State Treasury for nearly a decade.

In a statement to Parliament on Wednesday, Speaker Papuashvili highlighted the strategic importance of the State Audit Office in maintaining the integrity of public finances.

“The State Audit Office, as a constitutional body, plays a crucial role in ensuring the legality, purposefulness and efficiency of state spending,” Papuashvili said. “One of our key national priorities is effective budget management and reducing corruption risks.”

He added that Georgia ranked among the global leaders in anti-corruption indicators and expressed the government's ambition to place the country among the top three worldwide by 2030.

Gabitashvili has served in key roles within Georgia’s law enforcement and financial oversight institutions. He was Deputy Prosecutor General from 2013 and was appointed Prosecutor General in 2024.

“I believe that his election as Auditor General will significantly strengthen the State Audit Office and support the goals we presented to the Georgian people,” Papuashvili said.

Parliamentary procedures for Gabitashvili’s nomination are set to begin immediately and will conclude with a vote during a plenary session scheduled for next week.
