Opposition leader and former prime minister Giorgi Gakharia on Monday called for national unity as Georgia marks its Independence Day, warning that internal divisions continued to undermine the country’s strength and sovereignty.

In a statement shared on social media, Gakharia, who now chairs the Gakharia for Georgia party, described May 26 as a “day that symbolizes statehood, freedom, and unity,” while underscoring the ongoing challenges facing the nation.

“Congratulations on May 26 - Independence Day of Georgia! This day is a symbol of our statehood, freedom and unity,” Gakharia wrote. “Over the centuries, the Georgian people have endured many battles for freedom, but the fight for freedom and independence continues today.”

He warned that a lack of unity leaved the country vulnerable to external threats. “Today reminds us that without unity we weaken, and the enemy uses this against us,” he said, urging Georgians to come together for the sake of future generations.

“It is with unity that we will be able to build a Georgia where our children will have a decent future,” he added, concluding with a patriotic message: “Long live a united, free, independent Georgia!”
