Gakharia slams ruling GD’s decision to suspend EU accession: “Responsibility for betrayal cannot be escaped”

Giorgi Gakharia, leader of the For Georgia party, has sharply criticized Georgian Dream’s decision to postpone EU membership negotiations until 2028, calling it a betrayal of national interests. Gakharia stated that no individual involved in this act of betrayal would be able to evade responsibility.

“After falsified elections and numerous unconstitutional decisions, Georgian Dream has culminated its betrayal with an official shift away from the country’s pro-Western course, announced by the illegitimate prime minister, Irakli Kobakhidze,” Gakharia said.

He accused Georgian Dream’s founder, Bidzina Ivanishvili, of orchestrating this move, which he described as a severe blow to the country’s European aspirations. Gakharia emphasized that the decision disregards national interests and undermines the will of the Georgian people, who overwhelmingly support EU integration.

The controversy erupted following a statement by Georgian Dream leader Kobakhidze, who declared that the ruling party would postpone EU accession talks until 2028. This decision has been widely condemned by opposition leaders and civil society as a deviation from Georgia’s constitutional commitment to European integration.
