Gakharia urged national unity and a return to truth and reason

Former Georgian Prime Minister and For Georgia opposition party leader Giorgi Gakharia has warned that “uncontrolled chaos and disorder” threatened to engulf the country, following the shooting of Tornike Rizhvadze, the former head of the Autonomous Republic of Adjara.

In a statement published on social media, Gakharia urged national unity and a return to truth and reason.

“Uncontrolled chaos and disorder will affect us all,” he wrote. “Bloody quarrels - for the distribution of money stolen from the people. Only through wise action and truth will we emerge from the peace process in Georgia.”

His remarks come following the hospitalisation of Rizhvadze, a former, high-profile ruling party figure, with a gunshot wound to the chest. According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the incident is being investigated as an attempted suicide.

The ministry also confirmed that one individual has been arrested for negligent storage of a firearm.
