Giorgi Jincharadze, the head of the government of Abkhazia's autonomous republic, has called on young people displaced from Georgia’s currently Russian-controlled region to take an active role in Tbilisi’s peace and reconciliation efforts.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of a summer camp in Bakuriani on Thursday, Jincharadze said supporting the development of displaced youth was a priority.
“Their involvement in peacebuilding is vital, as they must play a decisive role in bringing Georgians and Abkhazians closer together,” he told participants.
The event, attended alongside Education Minister Givi Mikanadze, brought together children and teenagers who were forced to leave Abkhazia during the conflict in the early 1990s.
Officials also watched a theatre performance staged by the young participants.
The eight-day programme combined educational workshops, cultural activities and sports, aiming to foster skills and confidence among displaced youth. It is part of a wider support scheme for schools in Russian-occupied Abkhazia, running since 2022.
