The Chairman of the Government of the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia, Giorgi Jincharadze, has visited Abkhazia Public School No.1 in Zugdidi, western Georgia, near the country’s currently Russian-controlled Abkhazia region, to mark the start of the new academic year, sending greetings to students and teachers on both sides of the occupation line.

Jincharadze, accompanied by Abkhazia’s Minister of Education and Culture Beka Gvachliani, addressed the students and awarded gold-medal graduates during the visit.

“I chose to come to Zugdidi today to congratulate displaced students from Abkhazia, as well as those living in the temporarily occupied territories who still manage to receive education in the Georgian language,” he said.

The official also praised teachers working in the occupied territories, noting that they continued to teach in Georgian “despite fear and great risk”, and in doing so “preserve Georgia and its future in Abkhazia”.

Members of the Abkhazian government also sent their congratulations to students and teachers at Abkhazian public schools based in Tbilisi and other regions of Georgia.
