Rector of Shota Rustaveli Theatre and Film University, Giorgi Shalutashvili, on Monday spoke about recent turbulence at the university during a joint session of the Education, Science and Youth Affairs Committee and the Culture Committee.
Shalutashvili stressed the historical and cultural role of Georgian theatre in preserving national identity, noting that institutions such as the Giorgi Eristavi Theatre were founded under the guidance of prominent figures like Ilia Chavchavadze and Dimitri Kipiani.
He acknowledged that the university had experienced periods of turbulence, which affected students, particularly younger ones, who are more vulnerable to influence. “All revolutions happen through students because it is easy to persuade the young that heaven is within reach,” Shalutashvili said.
According to the rector, creative and pedagogical activities were now running smoothly, with near full attendance.
He added that a small group of 20-25 activists had previously harassed 600-700 students, but the situation has since stabilized. Shalutashvili also noted that some individuals who had spread misinformation have since apologized.
“The problem was that certain forces discouraged students from engaging in dialogue with the rector or faculty, which left this generation particularly affected,” he said.
