Giorgi Vashadze, a leader of the opposition Unity – National Movement opposition alliance, on Wednesday claimed that both the European Union and the United States had severed ties with Georgia’s ruling party, Georgian Dream, and its founder, Bidzina Ivanishvili. Vashadze emphasized the development marked a “clear divide” between Georgia’s current leadership and its aspirations for European integration.

“The European Union ended its relationship with Georgian Dream and Bidzina Ivanishvili. America also followed suit,” Vashadze said. He warned that the ruling party’s policies were leading the country toward “isolation” from the international community.

He further claimed the EU considered the Georgian Dream as an “obstacle” to Georgia’s European integration, with European leaders “openly expressing their opposition”. Vashadze urged the nation to choose a different path, one focused on European prosperity, which he believes is the only viable option for Georgia’s future.

The comment comes ahead of a European Parliament debate, scheduled for 5pm at Tbilisi time, where the EU High Representative, Joseph Borrell, will present a report. The discussion will cover key issues hindering Georgia’s progress toward EU membership.
