First Deputy Speaker of the Georgian Parliament, Giorgi Volski, on Thursday expressed hope the new US administration would also take into account Georgia-related issues in light of recent discussions surrounding USAID’s activities.

Volski noted that prank callers had reached USAID’s former head, who admitted that “billions of dollars” mentioned by the US administration were spent to influence political processes with targeted objectives and serious consequences.

“As we see developments in Ukraine and Moldova, the same topic was raised there, but Georgia should not be excluded from this context. We certainly hope that the new U.S. administration will pay attention to Georgia’s case as well. We know directly from them that tens of millions of dollars were spent in Georgia both before and after elections to organize destabilisation”, he said.

“These funds were used by specific NGOs, including for purchasing equipment and financing activities aimed at making the destabilisation process irreversible. This matter is currently under investigation by the Georgian Prosecutor’s Office”, Volski added.
