Zurab Japaridze, the leader of the Girchi-More Freedom opposition party, confirmed on Tuesday that ongoing consultations for “consolidation” ahead of this year’s parliamentary elections are taking place with Lelo and former director-general of Mtavari TV channel, Nika Gvaramia.

Japaridze clarified that such talks were not occurring with the United National Movement (UNM) opposition. However, he acknowledged the existence of cooperative formats with the UNM on specific issues.

“We are actively communicating with Nika Gvaramia and other political groups. Our interactions with Lelo are frequent, and discussions with different parties are ongoing. Although final decisions have not been made, the ongoing consultations are a positive sign. We believe that consolidation is the ultimate solution, but we remain open to possibilities,” stated Japaridze.

Highlighting their stance on the National Movement, he confirmed that consolidation talks were not on the table, “yet, cooperative efforts are being explored concerning various matters.”

Regarding Nika Melia, the former UNM chair who has plans to found a new party, Japaridze mentioned their understanding that Melia’s group intends to establish a party first, and discussions about future plans will follow.
