The Georgian government has been blaming the opposition until now. Now they have invented a new legend, that if Georgia will not obtain the European Union’s membership candidate status, it would be Ukraine’s fault, opposition MP Roman Gotsiridze said on Friday.

Speaking in the parliament, Gotsiridze said the government was “lying” that it had fulfilled all 12 conditions for receiving the status by the end of this year, in contrast to the latest, oral report by the European Commission last month that said Tbilisi had fully met only three recommendations, partially met seven, showed “limited progress” on one and “no progress” on the remaining one.

“The international partners see this well, and what trust should they have in the government?” Gotsiridze said, adding if the bloc refused to grant Georgia the status, it would be the government’s fault.

“If we get the status, it will depend only on the geopolitical situation and on the fact that Georgia does not fall behind the Associated Trio”, he added.

In remarks on Ukraine, the MP stressed Kyiv had “always backed” Georgia’s EU integration and would continue so.
