Levan Khabeishvili, a member of the United National Movement opposition party who is running for its chairmanship, on Monday said the Georgian authorities had plans to arrest its members and activists in a bid to “weaken” the UNM.

“The government is trying to suppress the protest by bringing criminal cases against the members of the National Movement who are protesting against the murderous regime. We are talking about the incident that happened after the trial of [ex-president Mikheil]Saakashvili, where the chairman of the Khelvachauri organization of the party Mikheil Bolkvadze, civil activists Kakha Kvekveskiri, Davit Galogre, Khatuna Beridze and the head of the logistics and security service of the party, Besik Gedenidze, were in the courtyard of the court and protested the murder of Saakashvili and named the prosecutor as one of the main perpetrators”, he said.

He said he meant the prosecutors “who accept” Saakashvili’s death and “do not even care when the trial will end”.

Khabeishvili claimed a delayed trial could cause “fatal consequences” for Saakashvili.
