European Parliament Member Markéta Gregorová has issued a strong condemnation of the Georgian government's recent actions, warning that the situation in Georgia is “deteriorating alarmingly” and calling for a robust response from the European Union.

“The situation in Georgia is worsening in an alarming way, and this requires a strong reaction from Europe,” Gregorová said in an interview with Georgia’s TV Pirveli. “Georgian Dream has crossed every line.”

She emphasized that the imprisonment of opposition leaders indicates the absence of an independent judiciary in the country.
“Political prisoners mean the country does not have an independent judicial system,” Gregorová noted.

Reflecting on her visit to Georgia during the October 2024 elections, she recalled a troubling statement made by Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze.
“When we were in Georgia for the elections, we heard from Irakli Kobakhidze that he would ban the opposition,” she said. “We questioned whether he was serious, because such a move would undermine democracy entirely. Many dismissed it as election rhetoric. But now we see they meant it.”

“This is no longer just about banning parties — it’s about intimidating political leaders by throwing them in jail for doing nothing other than opposing the ruling party.”

Gregorová concluded by stating that based on the nature of the cases and ongoing political persecution, there is a clear argument that the jailed figures in Georgia are political prisoners — a fact that should alarm both European leaders and democratic institutions.
