The Head of Tbilisi City Hall Environmental Protection Service, Giga Gigashvili, resigned on Wednesday over the electrocution incident in central Vake Park on October 13, which killed one minor and injured two others.

The official announced his decision following the recent arrest of his deputy for professional neglect in the case, along with other eight individuals, which included heads and employees, as well as workers of the contractor firms in the renovation work of the central Tbilisi park.

Gigashvili told the media that he felt “moral responsibility”, and pledged cooperation with the investigation.

Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze, for his part, instructed his employees on Wednesday to check all work which involved a company Mshenexpert, which had been accused of producing a fake conclusion over the contractor’s work for the handover act with Tbilisi City Hall, stating that the move aimed to “prevent such tragedies”.

In response to the opposition’s calls over his resignation, Kaladze claimed that some forces were trying to use the tragedy for their interests and reiterated that he was ready to resign if his fault were revealed in the case.
