Head of Georgia’s National Center for Disease Control Amiran Gamkrelidze says that the country has recorded 144 cases of a new variant of coronavirus dubbed as Omicron.

He says that the majority of patients had mild symptoms.

“Only four of the 144 were hospitalized due to underlying illnesses,” Gamkrelidze says.

Georgian health officials predict that the new variant will replace the currently dominant Delta strain in the coming months as the new variant is spreading rapidly.

They also say that Omicron will boost the number of daily infections.

Georgia has reported 943 new cases of coronavirus of 15,032 tests, 2,789 recoveries and 37 deaths in the past 24 hours.
