“Not a good sign”: EU to discusses Georgia’s situation in upcoming meetings

EU Ambassador to Georgia Paweł Herczyński on Monday announced that the ongoing situation in the country will be a focal point in upcoming discussions among the 27 member states. Speaking to journalists, Herczyński highlighted a series of significant parliamentary and ministerial meetings scheduled for October, indicating “rising concerns” regarding Georgia’s political climate.

The parliamentary debate on Georgia is set for tomorrow, October 8, where a high-ranking EU representative is expected to deliver a speech on behalf of the European Union. Following this, on October 14, the EU’s foreign ministers will gather to officially address the issues facing Georgia, with further discussions anticipated during the European Council meeting on October 17 and 18.

Herczyński emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stating, “the fact that the issue of Georgia is being discussed by the ministers of foreign affairs and the leaders of the European Union is not a good sign. It reflects the leaders’ concerns over recent developments in Georgia.” He pointed to the “heartbreaking decision” made in June by the EU Presidents and Prime Ministers to halt Georgia’s EU accession process, citing “disturbing legislative initiatives and increasing anti-Western rhetoric” from the Georgian government as contributing factors.
