The European Commission is working on sanctions and measures to prevent funds from reaching the Georgian Government, while also supporting civil society, journalists and all those striving peacefully for a better future, said Anitta Hipper, the Commission’s spokesperson for foreign and security policy.

Hipper added the ruling Georgian Dream party was taking “repressive measures” inspired by Russian propaganda, adding “we condemn any form of violence, and what is happening there does not go unnoticed”.

She noted the EU was actively working on sanctions, ensuring that no EU funds flow to the Georgian authorities and instead focusing on supporting civil society and independent voices in the country.

“That is why we are working on sanctions, on ensuring that money does not go towards the Georgian authorities and on supporting civil society, journalists and all those acting peacefully for a better future - those who do not give up on the hopes and values Europe stands for,” Hipper stated.
