Incident after Armenia match can lead to UEFA sanctions, Georgian Football Federation President

The President of the Georgian Football Federation, Levan Kobiashvili, on Monday warned that an incident following Sunday’s match between Georgia and Armenia could result in sanctions from UEFA.

In a social media post, Kobiashvili condemned the actions of a small group of spectators who he said had invaded the pitch after the game, causing an unpleasant confrontation both on the field and near the visiting fans’ stands.

“This kind of behavior towards a fan of the visiting team is completely unacceptable,” Kobiashvili wrote. “It not only insulted the Armenian fans but also prevented our team from celebrating its victory with their loyal supporters.”

The President emphasized the negative impact the incident could have on Georgian football’s reputation, noting that it could damage the international image of the country. He also expressed concern that UEFA could impose sanctions, which would harm both the team and Georgian football fans.

Despite this, Kobiashvili also took time to praise the atmosphere created by the loyal Georgian fans, acknowledging their significant contribution to the team’s motivation during the match at Dinamo Arena in capital Tbilisi. He further extended his gratitude to the Armenian team and their supporters, as well as the Armenian Football Federation, for their hospitality and for fostering a friendly atmosphere.
The close sporting ties between Georgia and Armenia were underscored by their joint bid to host the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2029, a proposal Kobiashvili expressed hope for.

In closing, Kobiashvili thanked both teams for their dedication throughout the playoffs, praising the Georgian team’s determination and winning mentality. “Football unites us and brings success,” he wrote.
