Ex-Defense Minister Alasania: ’Suppression of people’s voice through violence is unacceptable’

Former Defense Minister Irakli Alasania has condemned the violent suppression of peaceful protesters in Georgia, calling it unacceptable. In a statement, he emphasized that the fight for a European future is not only the most pragmatic path but also a moral obligation to honor the memory of those who sacrificed their lives for Georgia’s freedom.

“The violent suppression of the people’s voice is unacceptable. The fight for a European future is not only the sole pragmatic path but also a moral obligation to honor the memory of the thousands of honorable citizens who sacrificed their lives for Georgia’s freedom. We are duty-bound to protect the will of the people and the path of the country’s development in their name,” the statement reads.

He urged the government and citizens to navigate the current crisis with wisdom, firm belief, and caution, emphasizing the importance of heeding the people’s voice rather than resorting to violent suppression.

Alasania criticized the recent decision to halt negotiations with the European Union and expressed alarm at the violent measures used against peaceful protesters. He warned that such actions risk driving the country toward deeper civil conflict.
