Former Georgian MP Irakli Gogava took to social media to voice his concerns about what he describes as an intensified effort to involve Georgia in a new war through a planned coup d’état.
Gogava drew parallels to past events, referencing the conflicts that followed previous power shifts in Georgia’s history.
“The 1992 coup led to the war in Abkhazia. The second coup resulted in the 2004 conflict in Tskhinvali and the 2008 war. Each time, we faced casualties, displacement, and territorial losses. This new attempt at a coup is aimed at dragging us into another war, which will bring more territorial losses, occupation, and significant casualties. Afterward, guerrilla warfare would begin as the occupiers move into populated areas,” he warned.
He accused what he called a “foreign war party” of orchestrating these efforts, claiming their goal is to destabilize and dismantle Georgia. Gogava dismissed slogans like “European future,” “democracy,” and “freedom” as deceptive rhetoric designed to manipulate the public. “Nobody intends to admit us anywhere. This is a big lie used to mislead part of the population,” he stated.
Despite these concerns, Gogava expressed confidence in the state’s ability to counter these alleged plans, citing the authorities’ understanding of the risks involved.
“It is unfortunate that some show irresponsibility at such a critical moment, but the good news is that the agents and useful idiots are being fully exposed. They will be held accountable—some by law, others morally,” he said.
Gogava claimed that recent protests in front of the parliament building, organized by what he referred to as a “foreign fifth column,” peaked at 10,000 participants. He argued that the resources for a successful coup are insufficient, stating, “They have around 500 trained ‘stormtroopers’ for violent actions, of whom about 200 are already detained. Meanwhile, the state employs 500,000 officials, and only about 800 statements of support have come from infiltrated agents and useful idiots.”
Finally, Gogava urged citizens to remain active on social media, in discussions, and in personal interactions. “We must be ready to defend our country and peace for the sake of our children,” he concluded.
