Irakli Kirtskhalia, leader of Georgia’s parliamentary majority and chairman of the ruling Georgian Dream faction, has accused the UK government and British media of spreading a “torrent of disinformation” about Georgia.
Speaking in parliament on Tuesday, Kirtskhalia cited remarks by former UK Prime Minister Liz Truss, saying there was no reason to doubt her statements. He described what he called a campaign of “shameful slander” against Georgia, alleging it included biased coverage by the BBC and other media outlets, and framed it as part of a broader political attack orchestrated by what he described as the UK’s informal oligarchic elite.
Kirtskhalia read Truss’s comments in full, highlighting claims about economic struggles, migration, and censorship, and said they reflected the current state of Britain while portraying Georgia unfairly. He called on British authorities to “take care of their own country and listen to their own people” and insisted there is no basis to question Truss’s words.
BBC’s recent report indicated alleged use of a banned chemical agent against antigovernmental demonstrators in Tbilisi late last year, which the Georgian Dream government has denied.
