Georgia’s parliamentary majority leader, Irakli Kirtskhalia, has said that the appointment of Mamuka Mdinaradze as state minister has already produced tangible results.
Writing on social media, Kirtskhalia said criticism questioning the significance of Mdinaradze’s new position had quickly been answered by developments in recent days.
“From the very first day of Mdinaradze’s promotion to state minister, people became nervous and asked what he could achieve from that position, claiming it was merely formal,” Kirtskhalia wrote.
He pointed to a recent statement made by Mdinaradze and a subsequent briefing by the Prosecutor General concerning the detention of individuals accused of violence.
“The state minister spoke about this a few days ago and today the Prosecutor General held a briefing on the detention of violent individuals,” he said.
“This is a concrete result and a swift fulfilment of promises.”
Kirtskhalia also referred to what he described as the “historic detention of spies” in recent months and wished Mdinaradze success in his role.
