Georgia’s parliamentary majority leader, Irakli Kirtskhalia, has said the ruling Georgian Dream party remains firmly committed to the principle that “the law is supreme for everyone”.
Speaking to the media after a parliamentary majority meeting, Kirtskhalia noted that State Minister for Coordination of Law Enforcement Agencies Mamuka Mdinaradze attended the session for the first time in his new role.
Kirtskhalia said Mdinaradze discussed the plans of various ministries and how coordination between them would be organised.
“We saw Mamuka Mdinaradze’s first promise after he was appointed State Minister for Coordination of Law Enforcement Agencies,” Kirtskhalia said.
He referred to the recent detention of special forces officers accused of abuses during protest rallies.
“He made a promise during a television interview regarding the arrest of those special forces officers who committed misconduct, which our open and hidden enemies had used for years for speculation,” Kirtskhalia stated.
The Georgian Dream politician accused opposition groups of ignoring attacks on police officers and state institutions during protests.
“They remained silent about burned and injured police officers, burned administrative buildings and attempts at a state coup,” he said, adding that those behind such actions were now portraying participants as “heroes”.
“We must remember that we live in a state governed by law. We must remember what the Georgian Dream’s policy is — that the law is supreme for everyone. We firmly support this policy and continue on this path,” Kirtskhalia added.
Last week, a court ordered pre-trial detention for individuals accused of violence against opposition politician Levan Khabeishvili, journalist Guram Rogava and Zviad Maisashvili during protest demonstrations.
