Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Wednesday said 157 companies have been granted conditional forgiveness on fines and penalties totalling one billion lari under a government initiative aimed at supporting Georgia’s energy sector.

Speaking at a government meeting, Kobakhidze said the programme, announced several months ago, has now concluded.

He said some companies declined to take part in the offer, resulting in the cancellation of energy projects with a combined capacity of 535 megawatts.

However, projects totalling 1,560 megawatts will continue to move forward, according to the prime minister.

Kobakhidze said the government’s decision would provide fresh momentum to the development of Georgia’s energy sector, which he described as an area of particular strategic importance.
