Kobakhidze said the anniversary would make this year particularly important for the country

Georgia’s Prime Minister, Irakli Kobakhidze, has said this year’s 17 May commemorations will hold special significance as the country marks 1,700 years since Christianity was declared the state religion of Georgia.

Speaking to journalists, Kobakhidze said the anniversary would make this year particularly important for the country.

“We are marking the 1,700th anniversary of Christianity being declared the state religion in Georgia,” the prime minister said.

He added that the government would take part in all relevant ceremonial events linked to the anniversary.

Kobakhidze also noted that a liturgy would be led by the new Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, Shio III.

“Accordingly, this year will be special for our country,” he said.
