Georgia’s Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has expressed confidence that the upcoming local government elections on October 4 will be held in a competitive environment but predicted a “clear win” for the ruling party.

Speaking to journalists on Monday, Kobakhidze acknowledged the presence of several major opposition parties as well as smaller ones participating in the elections. However, he emphasized that the ruling party’s focus remained firmly on securing victory across all 64 municipalities.

“Our sole goal is to win both mayoral and council elections in all 64 municipalities. In Rustavi, for example, our target is to win outright in the first round, and given all factors, this is entirely realistic,” Kobakhidze said.

He was particularly dismissive of the opposition’s chances, stating that incumbent Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze was expected to secure at least 60% of the vote against any challenger.

“It’s very simple here - there is no chance for the opposition. Our goal in Tbilisi is to win the mayoral election outright in the first round, and considering all factors, this is absolutely achievable,” Kobakhidze added.
