Georgia’s Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Thursday announced the introduction of a unified farm registry and reforms aimed at making agricultural subsidies more targeted and efficient.
Speaking at the presentation of an agricultural co-financing programme, Kobakhidze said the new system would improve communication between farmers and the state, allowing for more precise identification of needs and faster processing of support measures.
“For more effective communication, from 1 July this year a unified registry of farms will be launched,” he said. “This is not just a database – it is a tool that will help us clearly see the needs of each farmer, make state support more targeted, and speed up the financing of projects.”
He added that the government would introduce systematic monitoring of agricultural programmes in order to assess their effectiveness and adjust them where necessary.
“We are establishing systematic monitoring, which will allow us to continuously track the efficiency of programmes and introduce changes where needed,” he said.
Kobakhidze also highlighted the importance of agriculture for the country’s economic stability, describing it as one of the main pillars of the economy.
He said agricultural output had doubled in recent years, exceeding 8.5 billion lari, while agro-exports had increased 2.5 times to more than 1.8 billion dollars.
“A strong farmer means a strong village, and a strong village is a guarantee of our country’s economic sovereignty and national security,” he said, adding that the programme represented another step towards strengthening Georgia as a modern agricultural state.
