In a recent appearance on Imedi TV LIVE, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze asserted that businesses in Georgia will continue to operate freely, marking this as a key achievement of the ruling Georgian Dream party since it took office in 2012. His comments come in response to ongoing debates surrounding the halt of the country’s EU accession negotiations.

Kobakhidze addressed his earlier statement from November 28 regarding the suspension of the EU accession talks until 2028, claiming they have been interpreted as a setback in Georgia’s European aspirations. He claimed that this suspension has been misused as a tool for political blackmail against the country. “The only thing that is important for us… is that the European Council meets once a quarter; they should not keep this issue for blackmail,” Kobakhidze emphasized, reasserting the government’s commitment to European integration.

The Prime Minister stressed that the intention behind his previous remarks was misunderstood, noting that European integration remains Georgia’s unwavering choice. He pointed out that in that same statement, it was made clear that the government will strive to fulfill over 90% of its obligations towards EU membership by 2030.

Kobakhidze expressed disappointment with those he accused of spreading misinformation, namely outlets such as Mtavari TV, Formula, and TV Pirveli, as well as remarks made by EU diplomats. He urged business leaders to engage responsibly and accurately with the facts presented by the government, defending the ruling party’s integrity and dedication to transparency.

In a significant rebuke to critics, Kobakhidze questioned the motives of any businessmen who support the return of the United National Movement, suggesting that such affiliations could imply a desire to sidestep political accountability. He warned against the so-called bullying tactics and pressures from opposition parties reminiscent of past political climates before 2012.

“Under no circumstances will businesses face problems. We are responsible for this,” he concluded, reiterating his commitment to maintaining a stable environment for business growth and operation in Georgia.
