Georgia’s Prime Minister, Irakli Kobakhidze, has said his government wanted to “restart” strategic ties with the United States under Donald Trump, describing the relationship as one that should deliver mutual benefits.

Speaking to journalists on Tuesday, Kobakhidze confirmed that his government had sent both open and closed letters to the US president, setting out Tbilisi’s desire to launch the partnership “from a clean slate” with a clear roadmap.

“The overall spirit of these letters is that we want to renew our strategic partnership with the United States. This renewed partnership should reflect benefits for both sides - for the US and for Georgia,” he said.

The prime minister added that his government expected a “healthy approach” from Washington, expressing hope that cooperation would be revived in what he called a “healthy format.”
