Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Sunday emphasised the stability of the country’s Constitution and the Government’s efforts to safeguard national interests over the past seven years.

“It is noteworthy that during the last seven years, since the current 2018 version of the Constitution came into force, not a single amendment has been made, and no fundamental constitutional provisions have been altered”, Kobakhidze said during an event dedicated to the Constitution Day.

He highlighted that constitutional stability had directly contributed to the country’s steady development, allowing Georgia to maintain peace and overall stability.

Kobakhidze also noted that, unlike previous governments, the current ruling team had not attempted to tailor the Constitution to its own needs.

“During this period, our opponents, including foreign actors, attempted to adapt the Constitution to their own agendas. I recall, for example, the negotiations surrounding the April 19 Agreement, where one of the main demands was to introduce various amendments to the Constitution”, he said.

“I personally explained that revising the Constitution involves a complex procedure, including public discussions, broad societal involvement, and a high quorum for parliamentary approval. Such a process reflects respect for the Constitution. Under these circumstances, it was unacceptable for us to include any constitutional changes in political agreements”, the PM added.

Kobakhidze noted, “We understood that, for some, disrespecting the Constitution was the objective. Thanks to careful management, we protected our country’s national interests and prevented any violations of the Constitution over these seven years. This commitment must continue.”
