Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said developing the country's role as a regional transit hub remains one of the Government's main priorities, with investment in transport infrastructure aimed at improving connectivity and supporting economic growth.
Speaking at the opening of the third section of the Samtredia–Grigoleti highway, Kobakhidze said the construction of expressways forms part of a broader strategy to strengthen Georgia's transit capacity.
“One of our main objectives is to develop our country's transit function and enhance its connectivity, and the construction of expressways plays a particularly important role in achieving that,” the Prime Minister said.
Kobakhidze said the Government is also planning to expand the country's international airport capacity. He said a new international airport is scheduled to be completed in the capital city of Tbilisi by 2031, while the capacity of Kutaisi International Airport in the country’s west and Batumi International Airport in the Black Sea resort city will be significantly increased before then.
The Prime Minister added that the Government is continuing work to modernise Georgia's railway network and develop its ports.
He said the railway modernisation programme has been completed, the Baku–Tbilisi–Kars railway has reopened, and further reforms are underway to increase the network’s capacity.
Kobakhidze also said construction of the Anaklia deep-sea port is progressing as part of the Government’s broader effort to strengthen Georgia’s transport and logistics infrastructure and position the country as a key regional transit corridor.
