Georgia’s PM Irakli Kobakhidze has described the country’s armed forces as the principal safeguard of national sovereignty, speaking at a ceremony marking the 35th anniversary of the Georgian Defence Forces.
Addressing the event at Vaziani on Thursday, he said the foundations of the modern military were laid on 30 April 1991, when Georgia restored independence and began conscription of its first recruits.
He said the anniversary has since become a symbol of national resilience and military tradition.
“The army has always been and remains the main guarantor of Georgia’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity,” he said, adding that the Defence Forces have “defended the country’s freedom with dignity in every conflict” since their establishment.
The PM also pointed to the role of Georgian troops in international operations, noting that service alongside international partners had contributed to global peace and security and strengthened the country’s standing abroad.
Kobakhidze further noted the professionalism and courage of Georgian soldiers have earned significant international recognition and the trust of partner nations.
He also paid tribute to those who have died in service, describing their sacrifice as a lasting part of Georgia’s national history.
“We remember with sorrow and deep respect those who gave their lives for Georgia’s unity and for peace in the world,” he said. “Their dedication is an inseparable and enduring part of our history.”
