Georgia’s Government is committed to transforming the Middle Corridor - an international multimodal transport route linking Europe and Asia via the South Caucasus and the Caspian Sea - into the “most reliable, secure and efficient” transport corridor in the wider region, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said on Wednesday while speaking at an event marking the completion of the Georgian Railway modernisation project.
Kobakhidze noted that the world is undergoing major geopolitical and economic transformations, with global supply chains being reshaped and the importance of safe, predictable and trustworthy transport routes steadily increasing. In this context, he stressed that Georgia’s role must be reinforced through well-considered and strategic decisions.
The Prime Minister said Government initiatives such as the Anaklia Deep Sea Port project, railway modernisation and the development of East–West road infrastructure are clear reflections of this strategic vision.
“Our future lies precisely in our intermodal transit function, which integrates all modes of transport into a single ecosystem,” Kobakhidze said, adding that the digitalisation of logistics processes - currently underway - is also a key component of this effort.
He highlighted that the Middle Corridor is not merely an alternative route but a new standard for connectivity between Europe and Asia. The Government’s goal, he said, is to position Georgia as a key, reliable and indispensable link within this corridor - ensuring the fast, safe and uninterrupted movement of cargo.
Kobakhidze highlighted that railway modernisation plays a central role in achieving this vision, as it strengthens Georgia’s competitiveness, increases its transit potential and lays a solid foundation for accommodating the growing trade flows expected between Europe and Asia in the coming years.
