Georgia plans to gradually restrict the use of plastics that come into direct contact with food, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze announced.
Kobakhidze said a government decree was being prepared that will ban the provision of food in plastic containers at public catering establishments from 1 July 2026. From 1 February 2027, the production, import, and sale of food in plastic packaging will also be prohibited, with some exceptions for specific product categories.
“Research shows that increased plastic use negatively affects both the environment and human health. Exposure to certain plastics can contribute to cancer, reproductive and neurological disorders, hormonal imbalances, and other medical conditions. This requires urgent attention,” Kobakhidze said.
He added that the Ministry of Environment and Agriculture had developed a phased model balancing public health, environmental protection, and economic interests. Some steps have already been taken: since 1 January, certain single-use plastic tableware has been banned in production, import, and sale.
“These measures are important to better protect the environment and the health of our citizens,” the Prime Minister said.
