The talent, hard work and dedication of Georgian athletes brought the country a “record” 1,935 international medals in 2025, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said on Tuesday while addressing the Best Athlete of 2025 awards ceremony.
“Today we are summing up a year that brought tremendous success for our athletes and for our country. The talent, hard work and dedication of our athletes earned Georgia 1,935 international medals in 2025, which is a record figure. For this, our athletes deserve special thanks,” the Prime Minister said.
He noted that the phrase “for the first time in history” was heard 42 times this year. Among the highlights, Kobakhidze pointed to the national basketball team’s historic achievement of finishing among the top eight teams at the European Championship.
“For the first time in history, our basketball players placed among the top eight teams in Europe. This is an outstanding achievement, especially considering that they finished ahead of traditional basketball powers such as Spain and France,” he said, thanking the team for their performance.
Kobakhidze also highlighted the success of Georgian judo, noting that the mixed national judo team became world champions for the first time. He further praised the national handball team, which qualified for the European Championship for the second consecutive time.
Other historic milestones in 2025 included Georgia’s first-ever world championship title in fencing, the country’s first gold medal at the Winter Olympic Festival and the first Georgian female world champion in judo.
“These are just some of the remarkable and exceptional achievements that Georgian sport recorded this year,” the Prime Minister said.
