GeorgianPrime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Monday said the ruling Georgian Dream party could “easily surpass” 60 percent support nationwide in the upcoming, October 4 local elections, citing what he described as the opposition’s deepening crisis.

Speaking to journalists, Kobakhidze argued that the radical opposition’s foreign backers had made a “tactically irrational decision” by pulling opposition MPs out of Parliament and sending some to prison.

“As a result, they ended up in an even worse situation. Today we reviewed the latest poll results, and our party has the potential to significantly exceed 60 percent support nationwide. In Tbilisi, we are also in a position to win the election outright in the first round”, the Prime Minister said.

Kobakhidze added that opposition parties’ repeated mistakes were not their own but rather those of their “patrons”.
