Georgia has already built 383 kilometers of motorway nationwide, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said at the opening of a new 8-kilometer section of the Samtredia-Grigoleti highway, highlighting that the vast majority of this network was constructed after 2012.
Speaking at the ceremony, Kobakhidze noted that only 68 kilometers of high-speed motorways had been built in Georgia before 2012, while 315 kilometers have been constructed since then. He said the figures clearly demonstrated the government’s approach to infrastructure development, stressing that many of the recently completed sections involve significantly more complex terrain and engineering challenges.
The prime minister added that construction of the entire East-West highway corridor will be completed in the near future, covering the full route from Red Bridge on the Azerbaijan border to Sarpi on the Turkish border. According to Kobakhidze, the government also had a detailed plan to finalize all remaining motorway sections across the country in the coming years.
He emphasized the importance of international partners in implementing large-scale infrastructure projects, thanking the European Investment Bank for its involvement in the Samtredia-Grigoleti project. Kobakhidze also expressed gratitude to the builders, engineers, and all specialists involved, as well as to the Ministry of Infrastructure, the Roads Department leadership, and the infrastructure minister personally.
