Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has criticized the current and previous US administrations over their policies toward Georgia, while expressing support for President Donald Trump and his campaign against what he referred to as the “deep state.”

Speaking at a press briefing held at the ruling Georgian Dream party’s headquarters on Friday, Kobakhidze, who also serves as party chairman, delivered a statement on behalf of the party's political council.

Kobakhidze claimed that Washington's stance toward Georgia had shifted but not necessarily improved, alleging that the current US administration had failed to address or reverse what he described as “unjust” actions taken by its predecessor.

“The fact is that the current administration's attitude towards Georgia has changed radically,” he said. “The unfair approach of the previous administration, which has been carried out even more aggressively by official Brussels, appears to have been halted.”

However, he added that the Trump administration had not made efforts to repair the damage he attributed to past US policy.

“In fairness, it should also be said that the current US administration has done nothing to correct the mistakes of its predecessor,” Kobakhidze stated. “Unjust sanctions remain in place, and our openly expressed desire to reset relations has gone unanswered.”

The prime minister reiterated his party’s support for President Donald Trump and his campaign against what Trump and his allies have termed the “deep state”—a concept often used to refer to alleged unelected bureaucratic influence over democratic institutions.

“We have repeatedly said and reiterate that we wish President Trump success in the fight against the deep state,” Kobakhidze said. “But we also have a reasonable suspicion that this fight may end not with the defeat of the deep state, but with its rebranding - potentially aligning itself with the US to drag Europe further into the Russia-Ukraine war and ultimately destroy both.”

Kobakhidze concluded by saying that time would tell whether Trump’s efforts would succeed but stressed that, in his view, the so-called deep state posed a threat not only to America but to Europe as well.

“Once again, we express our sincere desire for President Trump to fulfill one of his main pre-election promises and destroy the deep state,” he said. “Otherwise, the deep state - also known as the Global War Party - will destroy not only America, as Donald Trump himself has said, but also Europe.”
