Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze declared on Tuesday that Georgia is more independent and sovereign than ever before, yet remains ready to defend its sovereignty with full determination. His remarks came during the official opening ceremony of Georgia’s new General Consulate in Milan, held alongside celebrations of Georgia’s Independence Day.
“Today, in this beautiful country and this beautiful city, we celebrate Georgia’s Independence Day. This day fills each of us, every Georgian, with special pride because it reminds us of our centuries-long struggle for freedom, independence, and sovereignty — a struggle that has claimed the lives of many Georgians,” Kobakhidze said.
He emphasized that independence is not a given, but a continuous process that demands constant effort. “Georgia is a small country historically located at the crossroads of empires. In such circumstances, it was always challenging to maintain independence, but the Georgian people have consistently demonstrated an indomitable spirit,” he stated. “Despite a difficult history, we have preserved our independence and our identity.”
Kobakhidze also underscored the importance of international partnerships in safeguarding national interests. “When it comes to defending the national interests of our country, it is crucial to build relationships with our friends and partners. We take pride in the friendship between Georgia and Italy, and in the ties forged between our peoples. We believe that we share common values,” he said.
The Prime Minister praised Italy’s support for Georgia’s sovereignty and highlighted the strong bilateral relationship that has developed over decades. “We are grateful for the friendship we feel from you and for the unwavering support you have shown,” he concluded.
The opening of the new consulate in Milan is seen as a major step forward in deepening the diplomatic and cultural ties between Georgia and Italy.
