Georgia’s Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Thursday expressed optimism about improving relations with the United States, emphasizing his hope that the Donald Trump administration would demonstrate strength over what he referred to as the “deep state."
Speaking to journalists, Kobakhidze said the Georgian government had made "very specific offers" to the American side, signaling readiness to reset bilateral ties. "We have an offer to the American side, we have voiced this offer many times… we are fully ready to reset relations and are waiting for reciprocal steps," Kobakhidze said.
The PM further suggested that if the US administration did not take reciprocal steps, it would indicate that the "deep state"- a term often used to describe a perceived network of powerful, unelected officials - was maintaining influence over the government. However, Kobakhidze remained optimistic, expressing hope that the Trump administration would overcome such influences.
"We hope that the Trump administration will turn out to be stronger than the 'deep state,' will weaken it, in which case, I think that very specific reciprocal steps will already be taken by the new administration," he added.
