During a briefing with Georgian journalists in Rome, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said that the US administration under President Donald Trump had reiterated positions that Georgia has been advocating for years, confirming claims made by Tbilisi since 2022.

Kobakhidze also criticized what he described as double standards in the application of sanctions and trade restrictions to Russia.

“We were criticized for not imposing sanctions and for having limited trade relations with Russia. Meanwhile, for example, the Baltic states, which are among the most aggressive in this area, sell four times more wine to Russia than Georgia. This applies to Latvia and Lithuania. Such double standards are evident. In other areas, these countries maintain significantly more active trade with Russia than Georgia. Therefore, their criticisms were unfounded,” Kobakhidze said.

Regarding the broader regional situation, Kobakhidze expressed optimism, saying “as for the overall development of these processes, we will wait and see. We hope that peace will eventually be restored in our region, in Ukraine, which is vital for the continued economic development of the European continent”.
