Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Friday expressed hope that once a new US ambassador is appointed to Georgia, the Embassy would align itself with the Trump administration rather than what he described as the “deep state.”

Responding to questions from journalists about the US State Department’s reaction to controversial remarks made by protesters concerning the murder of American citizen Ryan Kirk, Kobakhidze said the Embassy’s current position was “unclear” due to the absence of an ambassador.

“Let’s see how the Embassy eventually positions itself. Today, there is no ambassador appointed, and therefore there is a certain ambiguity within the Embassy. I hope that when the ambassador is appointed, the Embassy will ultimately serve the Trump administration, and not the ‘deep state,’ as former ambassadors have done in past years,” the Prime Minister stated.
