PM Kobakhidze: “Reintroducing treason law Aims to prevent future betrayals”

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has stated that reinstating treason provisions in the country’s legislation is necessary to prevent future acts of betrayal. Speaking to journalists in Uzbekistan, Kobakhidze emphasized that the move is intended to deter individuals, including leaders of the opposition United National Movement (UNM), from committing treason.

He recalled that prior to the 2008 war, the administration of former President Mikheil Saakashvili had initiated and later passed a law removing treason-related provisions from both Georgia’s Criminal Code and Constitution. According to Kobakhidze, this was a deliberate act, enabling certain political forces to commit treason without facing legal consequences.

“This was a premeditated act of betrayal, and the legislative and constitutional amendments were part of it. We need to restore treason provisions in our legislation to maximize prevention. While no law can provide full protection, it will instill greater fear in individuals, including UNM leaders, and deter them from committing acts of treason in the future. That is our optimistic expectation,” the Prime Minister stated.
