Georgia’s Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has defended recent personnel changes within the government, saying the appointment of new ministers from outside existing structures reflected a broader pool of candidates rather than political favouritism.

Speaking to journalists, Kobakhidze said multiple changes had been implemented, with most new ministers selected from outside the government. He rejected criticism surrounding the appointments, describing it as unfounded speculation.

“The fact that candidates are selected from a wider team is entirely logical,” he said, adding that such practices were common in other countries.

Kobakhidze stressed that ministerial posts were political positions and argued that appointees should have prior political experience, particularly links to the governing team.

He also dismissed the possibility of recruiting figures from opposition parties, citing what he described as concerns over competence. “Naturally, we will not select or attract personnel from the radical opposition alliance, nor do we intend to recruit from opposition ranks more broadly,” he said.
