Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has announced that Georgian football star Khvicha Kvaratskhelia will be honoured with the Order of St. George, the nation’s highest state award, following his success with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in the UEFA Champions League.
Speaking at a government session on Tuesday, Kobakhidze described the accolade as “very well-deserved” and expressed pride in Kvaratskhelia’s achievements.
“Khvicha’s victory in the Champions League is the highest peak in football and a matter of special pride for all of us,” the PM said. “His success is perceived by every fan as a victory for Georgia itself. Beyond congratulating him, we owe him gratitude for the glory he has brought to our country.”
Kvaratskhelia played a key role in PSG’s historic 5-0 victory over Inter Milan in the Champions League final held in Munich, scoring one of the goals and becoming the first Georgian to score in a UEFA club competition final. This triumph marked PSG’s first-ever Champions League title, capping off a continental treble that also included Ligue 1 and Coupe de France wins.
“Last year, Khvicha received the Order of Honour for his performances with the national team,” Kobakhidze added. “Now, for his extraordinary success at club level, we will present him with the Order of Victory of St. George.”
After joining PSG in January 2025 from Napoli for a reported €80 million, he quickly established himself as a crucial part of the team’s attack.
Kobakhidze concluded by wishing the footballer continued success, confident that this Champions League victory “is only the beginning of many more achievements to come.”
