Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Monday said certain foreign ambassadors, including the European Union’s Ambassador to the country, were directly involved in activities in Georgia that, in his view, foster radicalisation and contribute to the “corruption” of individuals in the country.

“When the EU ambassador is directly involved in such processes, it is very regrettable and harms the EU’s image in Georgia,” Kobakhidze told reporters.

He drew a historical comparison, citing early 20th-century Georgian Bolsheviks, and said Georgia had previously implemented legislation to counter similar processes.

“We have adopted the Transparency Law to oppose such activities, and in every way, we will protect our country from these processes. The direct involvement of the EU Ambassador is concerning and negatively affects the EU’s reputation in Georgia. This is a very alarming development that we must all resist,” the Prime Minister added.
