Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze declared that criminals have no place in Georgian politics, emphasizing the need for political representation to reflect patriotism and integrity rather than criminality. He made the remarks during his annual address to Parliament, responding to questions from members of Parliament.
Kobakhidze highlighted the ongoing work of the parliamentary investigative commission, describing it as a vital process that must yield concrete results. He praised the commission’s efforts, particularly acknowledging its chairperson, Tea Tsulukiani, for leading what he called an essential investigation into crimes committed by the previous government.
The Prime Minister argued that it is important for both political actors and the public to regularly recall the wrongdoings that occurred under the pre-2012 administration. According to Kobakhidze, the former regime was “entirely based on criminality,” with no regard for human dignity or public welfare. He said that this pattern fundamentally changed in 2012 when a new political approach was introduced.
Kobakhidze also stressed he is concerned over attempts from abroad to reinstate individuals from the former government into positions of power, noting that public campaigns had been launched in support of their return. However, he stressed that the Georgian people cannot and should not be forced—by external or internal actors—to return alleged criminals to government.
“We must all understand once and for all that there is no place for criminals in Georgian politics. This is a dignified Georgian state, where politics should be represented not by criminals, but by patriots,” the Prime Minister stated.
