Georgian PM slams US sanctions as “counterproductive”, calls for pragmatic approach

Georgia’s Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Wednesday criticized the recent use of sanctions by the United States on Georgian officials for “undermining democracy” and alleged violation of human rights, describing them as “absolutely counterproductive”.

In his comments, the PM expressed confidence any potential sanctions against Georgia would be avoided.

Speaking to journalists, Kobakhidze alleged those considering sanctions would ultimately “act pragmatically” to prevent adverse outcomes.

The official also highlighted the recent US financial sanctions imposed on two high-ranking Georgian police officials, “both of whom participated in the 2008 Russia-Georgia war”, and argued such decisions “demonstrate a lack of sound judgment” and stressed individuals responsible for making sanctions-related decisions should avoid “such errors”.

“Sanctions are counterproductive”, he reiterated. “Everyone has seen the negative impact of sanctions, and I believe more pragmatic decisions will prevail in the future”.
