Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze expressed confidence that Mikheil Kavelashvili’s election as Georgia’s president will significantly contribute to reinforcing the country’s statehood, sovereignty, and reducing political polarization. Kobakhidze made these remarks during a briefing at the Government Administration.

“I congratulate Mikheil Kavelashvili on his election as the President of Georgia. I am certain that his leadership will make a crucial contribution to strengthening Georgia’s statehood and sovereignty, while also decreasing radicalism and so-called polarization in the country,” Kobakhidze stated.

The Prime Minister emphasized that under Kavelashvili’s leadership, the presidency would reclaim its constitutional role and mission:

“For over two years, Georgia has lacked a patriotic and balanced president. Kavelashvili’s presidency marks a transformative shift for our nation. The president’s primary mission is to unite the country and its society. Unfortunately, in recent years, external forces exploited the presidency to divide society and undermine constitutional order. The constitution was systematically violated with direct support from foreign actors.”

Kobakhidze highlighted that Kavelashvili’s presidency will restore dignity to the institution and align it with constitutional principles. “I wish Mikheil Kavelashvili success as he takes on this critical role for our country,” he concluded.

Kavelashvili was elected Georgia’s sixth president earlier today by the Election College, marking the first non-direct presidential election under the current system.
