PM Kobakhidze said the decision was made following consultations with the business sector

Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Wednesday said the government has decided to postpone the implementation of regulations on the import and market placement of beverages in plastic bottles by four years, until 1 February 2031.

Speaking at a government meeting,  Kobakhidze said the decision was made following consultations with the business sector.

He noted that plastic consumption poses risks to both human health and the environment, and that several measures to reduce plastic use have already been taken.

“While this process will continue gradually, we also need to consider related factors, including the legitimate interests of businesses and the potential impact of regulations on consumer prices. We held active consultations with the business community, and I thank the Ministers of Environment and Agriculture for their support,” the PM said.

After these consultations, he said, the government decided to delay the regulation on the production, import, and market placement of beverages in plastic bottles until 1 February 2031, adding that the decision reflected a careful, consultative approach.
